GameRokS Review: Patapon

Music and armies were best friends during the Braveheart era, Patapon brings us savagery in a fun and very artsy-colorful presentation.
Beat your drum while you witness Lemmings on acid. Patapon brings life and color back to the PSP in a fun and addictive collection of missions. You are their God and their protector, you must provide your squirmy Patapon army beats to help them protect their village and reclaim the throne as the dominant people.

Although this game is rhythm based at its core, there is actually a great deal of strategy involved. You must mix the right elements to create powerful soldiers, as well as choose the right formation and divisions to win certain missions. Additionally, you must feed your grunts, so hunting is also a daily responsibility. Through out the game you will learn different three to four beat songs that, when played correctly, order your Patapon army to perform a desired action. The better you are at keeping the beat the more effective your soldiers will be in their attacks or actions. Being the omnipresent general, you will have to develop you infantry, calvary and other division you will discover along your quest.

Even more sweet is the fact that while you are discovering more powerful weapons and soldiers, you will also come across miracle tablets that will help Patapon cross fiery deserts by making ti rain or reach distant foes by making it windy. Miracles in this game sometimes are not enough, it’s hard enough you have to enter the exact beat to activate these miracles, not to mention that once activated they only last for a limited time.
That is why it is extremely important that you choose the right combination of soldiers and miracle tables before each mission, especially when facing boss missions in where you will loose a large a number of soldiers, fortunately they can be revived once the mission is successfully completed. At first the mini songs you will have to play to control your Patapon will get annoying, luckily the better you get at playing them the more they grow on you. Witnessing your army grow keeps you glued to your PSPS and more interested in continuing the Patapon fight. From catapults to billy-club wielding fat Patapon, this game is fun and challenging from it’s hunting missions to castle conquering journeys. If you want to minimize the death of your beloved giant eyed army, don’t forget your headphones you don’t want to miss a beat.
