Iron Man Box Art

With the great blockbuster success and relative critical acclaim of the movie, the Iron Man game was ready to impress alongside it’s theatrical released brother. Graphically, the game is impressive, not to mention this game has one of the most enjoyable voice acting sound tracks on any platform. But what matters most dissapointed, it’s gameplay.

Loosely, very loosely based on the motion picture, the Iron Man game features the same cast and, up until the third or so mission, share a similar story line. A terrorist group captures Tony Stark to make weapons for its army, reluctantly he accepts the job with an explosive escape mission in mind.

Once the first cut scene is finished, you’ll be in full iron learning to control the Mark I, Tony Stark’s Iron Man prototype. The first few minutes of gameplay pretty much some up the entire game, shoot anything and everything while avoiding taking on heavy damage. You’ll also notice, and frown upon, the shaky camera and over sensitive aiming controls. While you are on the ground, Iron Man controls ok, but try flying and shooting at the same time, not even the most ambidextrous and multi jointed individual will be able to keep up with the camera and Iron Man’s enemies on screen. Hovering in this game will become your biggest ally, that and finding places to hide while the boss of each stage unloads millions of missiles in your direction. Even then, the game punishes every level of gamer to the point of profanity and mama’s boy tears.

There are positives, punching tanks until they explode is really satisfying. Hovering in mid air is pretty cool, just wished they had perfected other areas of Iron Man’s flight mechanics. As mentioned earlier, the voice over track is on par with the film, “funny” one-liners and all, and lastly, graphics fanatics wont be disappointed with this game. Be ware, HD visuals did not save this game from free falling into mediocrity, and just like other movie licensed games, this one also felt pushed to the store shelves. Perhaps if the controls were a little tighter the game would of been much more enjoyable.
When you have hundreds of tanks and machine guns firing in your direction, imprecise controls will frustrate even the most avid of gamers. If you truly love Marvel Comics as I do, this is a rental at most.
