Tomb Raider Lara Croft

Tomb Raider: Anniversary for Wii Review

By Ross Lefko

10 years after the original “Tomb Raider”, and more importantly Lara Croft, were released upon the public, Eidos brings us Tomb Raider Anniversary. The game is a re-imagining of the first Tomb Raider game, with levels and plot taken from the first game updated with better graphics for the next gen consoles. Of course there are new levels for those who are familiar with the first game, so it will be a new experience for everyone who picks it up.

The story goes that young and busty Lara Croft is an archeologist looking for the last treasure her late father was on the hunt for, the Scion of Atlantis. When you start the game you can either hone your skills in Croft Mansion of jump right into the main game itself. You’ll immediately notice the graphic quality has much improved since Lara’s first outing. The hard polygon shapes have been refined, making for a much smoother graphic look. Lara herself looks much better, though still top heavy at least she can now see her feet. After the first cut scene you are charged with making up the top of a snowy mountain and entering the first tomb in Peru. Luckily the onscreen instructions will help you navigate Lara’s many abilities so you can quickly climb the mountain and get started.

The controls for the Wii are different from the other versions of this game since you only use the Wiimote and Nunchuk for all the controls. The control stick lets you run Lara around while the A button lets you jump. If you jump towards a ledge, Lara will grasp onto it and you can either have her shimmy around it, or jump to another ledge. This has been greatly improved since the first game, since now Lara can “see” the other ledge she’s making the jump to and jump successfully. Combat his handled by holding the Z button, and aiming Lara’s trademark twin guns by using the Wiimote to move the target around the screen. I found this to be quite difficult in shooting the bad guy, as you have to run around with the control stick AND aim at the bad guy and shoot all at the same time. Not to mention the camera movement gets crazy here and a lot of times I couldn’t even see the enemy I was trying to aim at. When not being chased by a rabid wolf or bear, you can hold the C button on the nunchuk and move the Wiimote to look around the screen. The camera is better trained than the original game to move around behind you, but sometimes it can still be a problem.

The sound seems to be pretty decent. Lara grunts and yells as she jumps and climbs around the screen, and the voice acting seems to be ok. There is not much use of music, as you will mostly just hear the ambient sound of the tomb you are in; dripping water droplets are going to be your friend.

There are some neat puzzles specific to the Wii version, in which you have to use the Wiimote to pick up things and move them around the screen. For example, one puzzle has you picking up a gear and placing it in different cogs to find out which one will let the mechanism turn and open the door. There was also an instance where Lara had to wipe the dust off some hieroglyphics. You shake the wiimote to flick the dust off the pillar with a brush. Then use move the wiimote up and down to make a rubbing of the symbols to be used on a puzzle later. All said, it’s a pretty cool way to more interact with the game, and it seems to work well in practice too. Tomb Raider Anniversary is quite an interesting game. The difficulty is quite hard, even when set to easy mode, but it is very rewarding to make it thru a tough section once you figure out where to go. I recommend picking this game up if you have a lot of patience to get thru the tuff tombs.
