It took roughly 730 days to complete one the most amazing games I have ever played. Not for its thick-necked space marine themes, or its HD graphics, not even for its on-line multiplayer, in fact none of the above are in the game I played. As shocking as it may sound, this game relied on something so rare and forgotten it’s almost forbidden to mention amongst the video-game development community. “Game play” is that certain idea that actually made this game memorable and become part of my very short list of favorites. Its amazing presentation showed creativity can be achieved on any platform, not just the ones with the most expensive microchips or processors.
Super Paper Mario for Wii has the largest collection of elements that make a game truly enjoyable. From its perfect balance of difficulty and challenges to its overall friendly “For All” presentation. Some critics consider the game to have good graphics, I say it’s “art.” The designers of this game took perfect care to create a moving story book filled with incredible colors and charismatic special effects. These not only invigorated each play session, but threw in buckets full of wet nostalgia, drenching the splash zone in front of your TV with homage pieces to Nintendo 8bit glory days. Additionally, a well written narrative that actually made some sense and provided unique comedy, created a true classic that will no doubt withstand the test of future gaming platform time. I’ve been adamant about removing text driven dialogues in games of now, but the zaniness of the writing staff allowed me to become a bookworm of sorts once again. I would hate to turn this into another positive review of this game-which it deserves, so I’ll get back to boasting on how I finally beat the game after 2 years.
The path to final victory was arduous, not because my skills are meek, simply because this is one of the longest games I have ever played. Altough married, and more importantly having a life, put this great game on the back burner. It took some inspiration and a few ounces of caffeine to put me on the fast track to accomplishing my goal. So, after so many months have passed since its release, finishing this masterpice allows me to feel complete and proud to have experienced a true gem in a console that more often then not gets overlooked by the “hard-core” gamer.
In any event, I’ll be moving to a shorter game. In the meantime, can you think of the game that took you the longest to beat?
